The College of Education - Qurna at the University of Basra organized a scientific discussion panel on the study entitled “Shawki Dhaif in the History of Arabic Literature until the Seventh Century AH - A Study in Light of Critical Discourse Analysis,” prepared by master’s student Raya Nimah Kazem, as part of the requirements for obtaining a master’s degree in the Arabic language.
The study shed light on the discourse of education as a foundational discourse in the upbringing and building of societies, and chose the book “The History of Arabic Literature” by Dr. Shawqi Deif due to its scholarly status and the fact that it is an essential reference in literary studies and a course in Arabic language departments.
The researcher adopted the critical discourse analysis approach, focusing on the social-cognitive approach that reflects the continuous interaction between discourse and society. The study consisted of three chapters, preceded by an introductory introduction to explain the contents of the title, while each chapter was divided into two sections that dealt with multiple aspects of the educational and literary discourse in the book.
The study concluded by mentioning the most prominent findings and recommendations, the most important of which was the call of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research to form specialized committees that work to compose a modern curriculum in the history of Arabic literature, carrying pedagogical and educational goals and values that are in line with the social, religious and cultural specificity of Iraqi society.
