A Master's thesis was discussed at the University of Basra, College of Education – Al-Qurna, Department of Biology, titled "Demographic and Molecular Study with Protein Level Estimation of Dopamine and Opioid Receptors and Serotonin Transporter among Users of Certain Narcotic Substances in Basra" by the student Haider Falih Shaker.
The survey aimed to study drug users at the Addiction Treatment Center in Basra to investigate certain genetic changes associated with amphetamine addiction. The study involved collecting 100 blood samples, including 80 samples from amphetamine users and 20 control samples from non-users.
The study included measuring the concentrations of several receptors and neurotransmitters associated with addiction—namely dopamine receptors, opioid receptors, and the serotonin transporter—to examine their relationship with amphetamine addiction and understand their role in the neurological and molecular mechanisms associated with addiction, as well as the histochemical aspects in grass carp.
