A master's thesis in the Department of Life Sciences at the College of Education / Qurna at the University of Basra discussed (a study of the concentration of some heavy elements in soil and water for selected areas in northern Basra) by researcher Naji Khudair Abbas in the central hall of the college.

Where the study dealt with the measurement of heavy elements in soil and water and knowing the percentage of pollution in the areas north of Basra represented by the areas (Al-Hawir - Al-Madinah - Al-Qurna - Huraybah - Al-Deir - and Al-Nashwa).

The study dealt with the measurement of soil texture and total organic carbon of the soil of the study areas

The results of the study showed that the areas north of Basra are contaminated with heavy elements due to oil pollution resulting from the use of chemicals and fertilizers in agriculture, as well as due to sewage waste.

And that most of the study areas are of sandy silty soil.
